Putting the Grá in Diarmuid and Gráinne: A Valentine's Special
Greetings, D&G fanatics!
Is it really that time of the week again? We’ve been busy preparing for
the show of all shows, from vocal warm-ups to set design! It’s finally February
and we’re just about ready to spring into spring, which can only mean it’s the
month of Saint Valentine’s Day! Time to embrace the topsy turvy, upsy-daisy, head over heels in lovey-dove! Whether
you’re coupled up or enjoying single life, our definitive list is sure to make
even the coldest of hearts swoon! Here are the five times Diarmuid and Gráinne gave us all
of the feels.
5. When Gráinne slipped Diarmuid
a love potion. Alarming? A little. Illegal? Most definitely. Perhaps
essentially poisoning your desired partner is crossing a (major) boundary,
however, the underlying the principle is actually quite admirable. Gráinne
pursued who and what she wanted. It’s typical in old literature and tales to
feature the noble male hero chasing the damsel in distress, but who said this
legend has to be traditional? Progressive for its time many centuries ago, we
still love a lady who takes action years later in 2020. If you ever needed a
sign to make the first move, take note from our Gráinne, this is it!
4. Gráinne rebelling against the
wishes of her family. Disappointing your parents isn’t always something that
is praised, however, Gráinne teaches us all a valuable lesson by dismissing her
arranged match with Fionn and pursuing her love Diarmuid instead; following
your heart is essential. Even if the consequences aren’t always the most desirable,
the journey is almost always sensational.
3: The representation of Step-parents and foster parents: It’s
commonplace in fairytales and folklore to feature any non-biological parent as
the epitome of evil. Diarmuid and Gráinne
completely eradicates this trope and gives us everything we didn’t know we
needed: the relaxed, Zen (and generally quite sound) Aonghus who even offers to
hide our favourite couple under his cloak of invisibility in attempt to prevent
them from being discovered. Juxtaposed with Gráinne’s, parents, Aonghus shows
the world that sometimes, family is more about behaviour than blood and that
you don’t necessarily have to be a father
to be a dad.
2: Muadhán’s guide to being the
ultimate Third Wheel: Oh, Muadhán. We cannot help but feel for the petrol
station attendant when entering the hotel, exclaiming “this is very romantic, a
hotel to ourselves”. Getting held at gunpoint and playing gooseberry?
That’s just exceptionally unfortunate. So, to all of the Muadháns of the world,
if you’re reading this, we hope you receive countless cards and cupid teddies
this year!
1: The Cinderella Scene: This
one just screams all things lovey-dovey. This bright and beautiful scene
wherein Gráinne dances as a chambermaid, reminiscent of a Disney princess gives
us all of the tingly feelings and reminds that, when all else fails? Sometimes
you just need a night off and a (preferably sparkly) dress!
And that concludes our list! If you have any moments to add, feel free

and greatest information about Diarmuid
and Gráinne! As always, we’ll be back next week with another post!
Slán leat,
